How Much Wider Is a Wide Shoe Than Regular in the UK?

A wide shoe is not one constant amount wider than regular across the UK market. In current model charts, the change is often a few millimetres at the forefoot for each width step, but it varies by size and brand. Some constructions also add upper volume without widening every part of the sole equally.

A real chart example

New Balance UK's 509 chart lists separate measurements for D, 2E and 4E at each UK size. At UK 8, the chart shows D at 10.6cm, 2E at 10.9cm and 4E at 11.3cm. In that model and size, 2E is 3mm wider than D and 4E is 7mm wider than D.

At UK 12, the same chart shows D at 11.4cm, 2E at 11.8cm and 4E at 12.1cm. The regular-to-wide change there is 4mm. These examples prove that even within one model, the difference can change with length.

Why the feel can differ by more than the ruler suggests

Width can come from a broader last, a wider platform, more upper material or a combination. Toe taper, instep height and heel shape affect perceived space. Two shoes with similar forefoot breadth can feel different if one has a shallow upper.

FitVille's women's general chart uses size-specific bands for D, 2E and 4E. The FitVille Women's Rebound Core V9 is sold in 2E and 4E, allowing a same-model comparison without altering length.

How to compare regular and wide properly

Measure both feet standing, use the larger result and compare the same model in the same length. Wear normal socks and approved insoles. Check that wider removes side pressure while keeping the heel and midfoot stable.

Do not measure only the removable liner: it may not represent upper volume or the usable width above the sole. An indoor walking test is essential.

FAQ

Is 2E always 4mm wider than D?

No. The New Balance example varies by UK size, and other models use different lasts and measurements.

Does a half size add the same width as choosing wide?

Not reliably. A half size also adds length and moves the flex point, so it is not a direct width conversion.

Bottom line

Expect a difference of a few millimetres in many model charts, but never interpret that as a UK-wide rule. Compare published measurements for the exact model and length.
