LugMax Slip-On V3 vs Merrell, Skechers & KEEN

Slip-on outdoor shoes solve a real problem — no laces to bend down for, no pressure across a swollen instep — but almost every pair on the market is built on a standard-width last and dressed up with stretch panels. The FitVille LugMax Slip-On V3 Low takes the opposite approach: it starts at Wide/2E, runs to Extra Wide/4E, and puts a lugged rubber outsole underneath at $78. Here is how it stacks up against the three slip-ons it will actually be cross-shopped with.

Why the width question decides this

Merrell, Skechers and KEEN all describe their slip-ons as roomy, and in KEEN's case that reputation is earned — the Original Fit genuinely gives toes room to splay. But "roomy" and "available in your width" are different promises, and only one shoe on this list keeps the second one.

  • Merrell Jungle Trek Moc is sold in one fit. Merrell does make a Wide Width Jungle Moc ($110, 2E), but the Trek Moc — the trail-leaning model with the FloatMax™ midsole — has no wide option at all.
  • Skechers uses Relaxed Fit®, a last that is cut fuller at the toe and forefoot. It is a cut, not a width system. A handful of styles add a WW, most do not, and the same model in a different colorway can land in a different fit.
  • KEEN Targhee IV Slip-On ships in Original Fit, which is wide-friendly by design; a Wide version exists through some retailers. There is no 4E anywhere in the line.
  • LugMax Slip-On V3 is sold as Wide/2E and Extra Wide/4E the same way it is sold in lengths, across all four colorways, at the same price.

If your feet are simply a little broad, all four can work. If you need 4E — bunions, hammer toes, post-swelling, orthotics, or genuinely wide feet — the LugMax is the only shoe here that offers it in every color, which is why FitVille builds its whole line around wide-fit lasts rather than stretched standard ones.

Traction and protection: lug design vs rubber compound

This is the category where the four shoes diverge most, because they are not really the same kind of product.

FitVille LugMax Slip-On V3 Low Merrell Jungle Trek Moc Skechers Slip-ins Outdoor KEEN Targhee IV Slip-On
Outsole compound Rigid lugged rubber Merrell sticky rubber Goodyear® rubber KEEN.RUGGED (2× abrasion resistance)
Tread Deep multi-directional lugs Shallow all-terrain pattern All-terrain, anti-slip wet and dry Multi-directional lug pattern
Toe protection Reinforced rubber toe bumper No hard toe cap Synthetic overlays High-abrasion rubber toe rand
Upper PU leather + Oxford cloth with reflective trim Knit and breathable mesh Leather and mesh Leather and performance mesh
Structural support High-rebound foam collar, moulded heel counter Stretch collar, TPU wear-zone overlays Heel Pillow® heel lock Stability shank, heel-capture system
Stated weight 405 g 330 g Not published 485 g

Two honest observations. First, the LugMax is the only shoe here with a genuinely aggressive lug pattern under a slip-on upper — the others are all-terrain treads tuned for pavement, gravel and campground, which is a fair description of how most slip-ons get used. Second, KEEN's KEEN.RUGGED compound is the durability leader on paper: KEEN states it is twice as abrasion-resistant as standard rubber, and the glue-free KEEN.FUSION bond carries a no-delamination guarantee. For rocky scree and repeated wet rock, that is a meaningful edge.

What the LugMax brings to the same trail is protection at the front of the foot. The reinforced toe bumper and the PU-leather upper take knocks from roots and stones in a way that a knit moc upper cannot, and the reflective trim is a small but real addition for early starts and road sections.

Stability, cushioning and arch support

Slip-ons have a structural problem that laced shoes do not: nothing ties the midfoot down. Each brand solves it differently.

Skechers solves it most cleverly. The Heel Pillow® is a firm, moulded collar that your heel slides past and then locks behind — genuinely hands-free, and the most engineered entry system of the four. KEEN uses a stability shank and a heel-capture system, which is why the Targhee Slip-On feels the most like a hiking shoe once it is on. Merrell relies on a stretch collar over a knit upper: light, breathable, and the least locked-in of the group.

The LugMax takes the simplest route — a high-rebound foam collar and a moulded heel counter — but backs it with a firmer platform: a high-rebound EVA midsole and an eco-friendly high-density foam insole. That combination matters for the buyers FitVille actually targets. The LugMax listing names plantar fasciitis, flat feet, heel pain, bunions, hammer toe, Morton's neuroma, neuropathy and arthritis, and the wide, evenly loaded platform is the mechanism behind most of those claims.

On arch support specifically, KEEN is the most explicit competitor: the Targhee Slip-On ships a removable foam insole with a contoured arch for midfoot support, and a shank underneath it. Merrell's Trek Moc gives you a removable PU footbed — supportive, but flatter. Skechers' Air-Cooled Memory Foam® is the plushest underfoot and the least arch-corrective; it is comfort foam, not support foam.

None of the four is a substitute for a fitted orthotic. All four accept one, which is why the removable-insole question is worth asking before you buy.

Price and value

LugMax Slip-On V3 Merrell Jungle Trek Moc Skechers Slip-ins Outdoor KEEN Targhee IV Slip-On
List price $78 $120 $90–$115 $155
Typical sale floor $78 ~$87 ~$60–$85 ~$135
Widest option 4E Standard WW (some styles) Wide (select SKUs)
Cost per available width $78 for 2E or 4E — — —

At $78 the LugMax undercuts the Merrell by roughly a third, the Skechers by 15–30% and the KEEN by about half — and it is the only one of the four where the widest fit costs exactly the same as the narrowest. For a category where the wide version is often a special order, that is the value argument in one line.

Where Merrell, Skechers and KEEN are genuinely better

  • Merrell — weight and refinement. At 330 g the Jungle Trek Moc is 75 g lighter than the LugMax and the lightest shoe here. Twenty-plus years of Jungle Moc iteration shows in the collar and the last; it disappears on the foot in a way heavier shoes do not.
  • Skechers — hands-free engineering and washability. The Heel Pillow® mechanism is not marketing; it is the only shoe here you can put on without using your hands at all. Add machine-washable construction and Goodyear® rubber on trail models and it is the easiest shoe to live with day to day.
  • KEEN — durability and construction. KEEN.FUSION fuses the upper to the outsole without glue and carries a delamination guarantee, and KEEN.RUGGED outsole rubber is rated twice as abrasion-resistant as standard. If you destroy shoes rather than wear them out, this is the build to beat.
  • All three — retail reach. Wider stock, easier exchanges in person, and review bases in the thousands rather than the hundreds.

Where FitVille LugMax Slip-On V3 wins

  • A real width system. Wide/2E and Extra Wide/4E on every colorway, sizes US 8–15, same price as a standard fit.
  • Trail-grade traction under a slip-on upper. Deep lugged rubber outsole and a rigid rubber compound — the most aggressive tread in this comparison.
  • Front-of-foot protection. Reinforced toe bumper plus a PU-leather upper that shrugs off roots, rocks and scuffs.
  • Water-repellent upper. FitVille bills it as waterproof-breathable; treat it as confidently water-repellent for wet grass, puddles and light rain rather than stream crossings.
  • Support-first construction. High-rebound EVA midsole and a high-density foam insole, aimed at the foot conditions wide-foot buyers actually have.
  • $78. Roughly half the KEEN, a third less than the Merrell, with the widest fit available at no premium.

FAQ

Are slip-on shoes good for hiking?

For maintained trails, fire roads, park paths and wet grass, yes — provided the outsole has real lug depth and the collar holds your heel. For technical terrain with side-hilling, scree or stream crossings, a laced shoe with a lockable midfoot is still the better tool. The LugMax sits closer to the hiking end of that spectrum than the other three slip-ons here, but it is water-repellent rather than a waterproof membrane shoe.

Which of these slip-ons is best for wide feet?

The FitVille LugMax Slip-On V3 Low, because it is the only one sold in both 2E and 4E across every colorway. KEEN's Original Fit is the roomiest standard-width last of the three brand-name options, and Merrell's Wide Width Jungle Moc is a genuine 2E — but neither offers a 4E, and Merrell's Wide does not extend to the Jungle Trek Moc.

Is the LugMax Slip-On V3 waterproof?

FitVille describes the upper as waterproof-breathable and water-repellent. In practice that means it handles wet grass, mud, puddles and rain on a day hike; it is not a membrane boot for standing in water. If you need guaranteed dry feet in sustained rain, a GORE-TEX or KEEN.DRY laced hiker is the right category, not a slip-on.

How does the LugMax Slip-On V3 fit compared to Merrell or KEEN?

Order your usual US length and choose your width — do not size up to get room. The 2E is comparable to Merrell's Wide Width and slightly narrower at the forefoot than KEEN's Original Fit; the 4E is materially wider than anything else in this comparison. If you wear orthotics, the insole is removable, so take the width you need with the insert in place.

Is 405 g heavy for a slip-on hiking shoe?

It is mid-pack. Merrell's Jungle Trek Moc is lighter at 330 g because it is a knit moc, and KEEN's Targhee IV Slip-On is heavier at 485 g because it is built like a hiking shoe. The LugMax sits between them, which is consistent with a PU-leather upper, a lugged outsole and a foam-cushioned platform.
