How to Find Your Exact Shoe Width in the UK
There is no single universal “exact shoe width” that transfers across every UK brand. Find your best starting width by measuring both feet while standing, then compare those measurements with the chart and method for the exact shoe model.
Record three measurements
| Measurement | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Foot length | Select the right chart row |
| Forefoot breadth | Compare with straight-width charts |
| Ball circumference | Use only when the brand requests girth |
Measure later in the day with weight evenly distributed. Mark the heel and longest toe, then locate the broadest points near the big- and little-toe joints. Measure both feet and keep the larger result for each dimension.
Translate measurement into a model width
Clarks uses D/E/EE for women's standard, wide and extra-wide, while its men's system uses G/H. Athletic brands may use D, 2E and 4E with different baselines by gender. The same letter therefore does not mean one universal millimetre width.
The FitVille Women's Rebound Core V9 chart gives foot-length rows and millimetre width bands. Brooks describes wide and extra-wide construction but still recommends fitting the model. Use the maker's current chart every time.
Confirm on foot
Measurements narrow the options; they do not replace a fit test. The forefoot should not bulge over the sole, the toes should lie flat, and the heel and midfoot should stay secure. Pressure over the instep may mean inadequate depth rather than insufficient breadth.
FAQ
Is 2E always the same width in millimetres?
No. The measurement changes with shoe length, model, last and brand.
Should I use the widest foot for both shoes?
Choose a pair that accommodates the larger foot, then adjust the smaller side with fastening or professional fitting advice if needed.
Bottom line
Your exact practical width is model-specific. Measure length and width, follow the exact chart, then confirm secure pressure-free fit on both feet.
