Extra-Depth Shoes vs Extra-Wide Shoes

“Wide” and “extra depth” solve different problems. Extra-wide footwear adds room across the foot, while extra-depth footwear adds vertical volume from the footbed to the upper. A shopper with a broad forefoot may need width; a shopper whose foot presses the tongue or needs an insert may need depth. Some feet need both.

Labels vary by brand, so evaluate the exact model. A shoe can be wide but shallow, or deep but too narrow at the toes.

When Width Is the Priority

Stand in the shoe and check whether the toes can rest naturally without touching the sides. The ball of the foot should sit over the widest part of the platform. Sizing up to gain width can create a long, unstable shoe, so start with the correct length in a wider option.

When Depth Is the Priority

Look for pressure across the instep, a tongue that folds or pulls sharply, or an insert that raises the foot into the upper. A removable insole may create additional space, but removing it changes cushioning and support. Only use an alternative insole if the maker and your clinician or fitter consider it appropriate.

Try the complete shoe with your usual socks and insert. Walk, turn, and bend at the forefoot. The upper should hold the foot without a single tight pressure line.

Choosing Both

Adjustable shoes are often the most flexible starting point because the opening and closure can accommodate more volume. However, adjustability cannot make a narrow sole wide or a loose heel secure. Check the outsole platform, heel hold, toe-box geometry, and return policy together.
